Welcome to the Parish Church of St John the Baptist at Adel
Written by Administrator
Sep 18, 2008 at 10:10 AM

Welcome to the web home of the Parish Church of St John the Baptist at Adel in north Leeds.

We are a friendly Anglican Church with parishioners of all ages attending a variety of formats of services, including very traditional services, and more contemporary formats, where we put a lot of time and effort into running a junior church

There is an active social side to the Parish, with regular Coffee mornings, Barbecues in the summer, walks, including Beating the Bounds (where the Parish Boundary is walked), quiz nights, barn dances and more.

Adel Bell Tower Appeal

You did it!

A wonderful response from the whole community.

I am delighted to record that thanks to the three highly successful events in February, which contributed over £2,500, we have now moved swiftly over the line and achieved our financial target.  This means we can fund the bill for the Bell Tower Repairs and the Bells will ring out the good news on Easter Day. There will be a “Thanksgiving Service” in Church on Thursday, 27th May at 7.30pm.

Thanks go to the wider Parish Community for your generous donations; to Ian our Parish Priest, The Parochial Church Council and the Church Members, in particular our Social and Appeal Committees, who have been magnificent in planning and managing events.  We have had terrific support from our partners Adel Association, Perennial at York Gate Garden, Adel History Group, Leeds City Council and Councillors, The Headley Trust (Sainsbury Family) and Leeds College of Music Community Wind Orchestra.  The Appeal launched in June 2009 raised the necessary funds in an incredibly short time due to everyone who has helped both in and outwith the Adel Parish Boundary.  It is clear that our remarkable Church, and its environs, is cherished by a very broad community indeed.

The Appeal is now closed however we will run out our programme with an emphasis on fellowship.  Any funds raised will go to support the “care and maintenance” of the Church.

Details of events and initiatives can found here.

If you wish to contribute to the "Care and Maintenance" of our Grade 1 Norman Church please send donations to David Boulton, Adel PCC Treasurer, 403 Otley Old Road, Leeds LS16 7DF. Thank You.

Here is a list of planned events and initiatives in support of Adel Parish Church.

Val Crompton, our local historian, has produced a book of superb quality on the "History of Adel".  This has 240 illustrations of which over 100 are in full colour.  It is amazing value at only £5 and can be purchased at Adel Parish Church on Thursdays between 1-4pm, Adel Wood Stores or by telephoning Val 0113 225 9142.

Geoff Steel is organising a family sponsored walk of the York Castle Walls on Saturday,17th April.  Use the Park and Ride and take a bus into York and meet at Lendal Bridge at 3.00pm.  If you travel by train it is a short walk from the station to Lendal Bridge. This is a great opportunity to walk the circuit of the walls and take in the array of daffodills.  Sponsor Sheets are available from Geoff Steel tel 0113 2678867, Mary Larner tel 0113 261 2589 or John Hartley tel 0113 2817461.

There will be an Organ Recital by the famed Dr Christopher Hainsworth on Sunday, 18th April @ 3.00pm 'til 4.15pm at Adel Parish Church. Chris has been described as "New Zealand's most entertaining classical organist.” Come prepared to be captivated with a mixture of high and low-brow music in a witty presentation. This is a rare opportunity to hear an internationally acclaimed musician. Chris formerly lived in New Zealand but now resides in France and is Director of Beziers Conservatoire and Organist of Beziers Cathedral. His ancestors are buried at Adel and he would like to help the Church and therefore voluntary donations will be sought at the end of the Recital. No need to book just turn up at the Church.

On Sunday, 9th May the tradition of beating the bounds will take place.  Walk the entire 14 mile circuit or just a part to suit your needs.  Val Crompton is the contact 0113 225 9142.

On 15th May at 6.00pm get ready to go on "Safari" in the Adel neighbourhood whereby you move from house to house for three courses of an evening meal.  It is an opportunity for those who attend different services at Adel to meet each other.  There will be no more than eight persons at each course.  Enjoy a friendly, simple and informal supper with the emphasis on informality.  Couples or pairs of friends will be asked to host one course and we will try to accommodate their preference.  After the pudding course we will all meet up for coffee to tell of our fun and adventures that evening.  If you live a long way from Adel Church you can join in by providing three bottles of wine for the main course instead of hosting a meal.  Everyone will be told two weeks in advance which course they are hosting and on the day itself you will be advised as to where you are going for your starter and the names of the hosts.  Find out more and/or how to join by telephoning Deborah Hainsworth on 0113 2611769, e-mail or Carole Smithies 0113 2813190.  To join Deborah needs your name, address, ‘phone number, e-mail if possible and any dietary requirements.  It will be a fun evening so join before the closing date of 17th April.

A  date for your diary, on Friday,11thJune at 7.30pm Adel Players, the marvellous local theatre group, have agreed to put on a Murder Mystery Play entitled “The Sins of the father” in the Church and refreshments will be provided in the interval in the Stables.

The Patronal Festival will be on the week-end 26th, 27th June 2010.

If you have any queries or questions simply send them to or call him on telephone 0113 2817461.
