Illuminating the Illuminations |
This was the inspired title for a fascinating talk delivered in the way that only Professor Joyce Hill can do. Joyce immediately volunteered to do a talk for the Adel Association as we are raising funds to get heritage lighting in Back Church Lane as we were agreed on the necessity for some illumination but wished to preserve the character of the road. Consequently we will be getting shorter light stands and with Victorian style lamps on top.
Joyce quickly came up with this title as one of her passions is the study of illuminated mediaeval manuscripts. So almost 100 people turned up to Adel Church on Saturday 2 April followed by a lovely supper put on by Sylvia Halliday and her team. And why did so many people turn out on a Saturday to hear this strangely titled talk? Joyce Hill - that's why! She had some amazing coloured slides which she brought to life by explaining how they were constructed along with the meaning of the symbols and the history of each one.
The Adel Association is incredibly grateful for Joyce's contribution to our project. What an asset Joyce is to our community.
